First year of immigration

First year of immigration

Moving to a new country brings its own set of challenges, and when it comes to taxes, things can get a bit complicated – especially in your first year. If you've recently made the Netherlands your home, understanding the ins and outs of the tax system here is crucial. One important aspect to grasp is the M-form, also known as the "migration form," which plays a key role in reporting your finances during your first year as a resident.

What is the M-form?
The M-form is a specialized tax document utilized by the Belastingdienst, the Dutch tax office. It's specifically designed to handle the unique tax situations that arise when individuals migrate to or from the Netherlands within a tax year. Essentially, this form allows you to inform the tax authorities about your income, assets, and tax responsibilities for the period in which you were not a full resident of the Netherlands.

Who Needs to File the M-form?

  • Moving to the Netherlands: If you've relocated to the Netherlands and are becoming a resident for the first time within a tax year, you'll need to file the M-form for that transitional period.
  • Leaving the Netherlands: Conversely, if you're leaving the Netherlands and no longer a resident during a tax year, you're still required to file the M-form to report your income and taxes for the time you were living in the country.
  • Changes in residency status: Any change in your residency status within a tax year – such as becoming a non-resident or re-establishing residency – may necessitate the filing of the M-form to ensure accurate tax reporting.

Filing the M-form:

  • Obtain the form: You can get the M-form from the Belastingdienst website or by contacting the tax office directly. Remember, there's a different form for each tax year, so make sure you have the right one. Alternatively, you can order the paper form to be sent to your house. Keep in mind that the package sent to your home is only available in Dutch. It will include two booklets: an orange one with perforated pages to fill out only the relevant to your situation and a grey one with explanations on how to fill out the orange. Additionally, an envelope will be provided for you to send the completed form to the appropriate authorities without needing to pay for a postage stamp.
  • Gather required information: Collect all necessary documents, including income statements and residency details, for the partial tax year you're reporting on.
  • Submit the form: Once you've filled out the M-form, submit it to the Belastingdienst either online through their digital portal or by mailing the physical form to the designated address.
  • Follow-up: Keep an eye out for any communication from the tax authorities and respond promptly to any requests for additional information or clarification.
