DigiD (Cross-Platform Identification)

Your DigiD is here to simplify your online interactions with official institutions like the government, educational institutes, healthcare providers, the driving license department, and even your pension fund. It's your secure ticket to hassle-free transactions on the internet without having to remember countless login details.

With your DigiD in hand, you can effortlessly and securely log in to any platform, knowing that your personal data is well-protected. But here's the kicker: in some cases, using DigiD is not just helpful, it's mandatory. It's the only way to cross-check your information and gain access to specific services. So, applying for your DigiD is a must-do, not an option.

When you apply for your DigiD please remember you need:

  • your BSN
  • remember your username and password, because you will need them to activate your DigiD
  • include your Dutch phone number and e-mail address in your application. This will enable you to  reset your password and activate the DigiD app easily.
  • optional: a Dutch speaking person nearby (sometimes, when you receive an initial verification email code on your phone and it doesn't work, the third attempt may involve a phone call where the digits are communicated to you in Dutch.

Once you've applied, you can expect to receive an activation code letter within a maximum of 3 working days (though delivery times may vary). This letter will be sent to the address registered in the Dutch Personal Records Database (BRP), the same address you provided when obtaining your BSN. If the letter hasn't arrived within a week, simply log in again and request a resend using the same username.

When the letter arrives, it's time to activate your DigiD and link it to your Dutch phone number. Additionally, you'll be advised to download the DigiD app, which comes in incredibly handy. To activate the app, you'll need to wait for yet another letter with the activation code. Once the app is activated, you can skip the part that asks for your Dutch ID if you don't have one. The app allows you to scan QR codes and generate one-time logins for official websites. It's a game-changer once you've gone through the activation process! Plus, it's one of the few official apps available in English, and the customer support team is extremely helpful and knowledgeable!
