When moving to the Netherlands, there are many websites and resources available to help you find an apartment. Here are some tips and recommendations for finding an apartment if you would also like to search by yourself.

One option for finding an apartment is through apartment search websites such as Pararius and Funda, the 2 most famous ones. Then there are other ones such as: Heimstaden, Roofz, REBO Huurwoning, Rebid, Van 't Hof Rijnland Vastgoedmanagement, LIV residential, Makelaardij Hoekstra, vb&t Verhuurmakelaars etc. These websites offer a variety of listings, from studios to family homes, and often include photos, rental prices, and contact information for the realtor.

When using these websites, it's important to be persistent and check them regularly. Apartments in Amsterdam can be in high demand, so it's a good idea to check for new listings every day. You should also create a profile on each website and save the apartments you're interested in by "hearting" them. This will help you keep track of the apartments you've applied for and make it easier to compare different listings.

It's important to note that not all listings on these websites may be available, and some may be under viewing or already rented. Be sure to filter your search results to show only available apartments, and avoid emailing realtors for listings that are not available. Also, be aware that some realtors may ask you to create an ID profile, which is a digital identification system used in the Netherlands. If you have not been employed in the Netherlands before, you may not be able to create a profile, so it's best to move on to another listing.

When looking for an apartment, there are several options: empty, semi-furnished, or fully furnished.
  1. An empty apartment is self-explanatory — it’s just the walls and roof.
  2. A semi-furnished apartment includes basic furniture (such as a bed, table, and chairs), essential household appliances like a fridge and stove or oven, and usually a finished floor with carpet or tiles.
You’ll still need to provide items such as linen, towels, kitchenware (pots, plates, cutlery), and small appliances like a coffee machine or toaster.
  3. Fully furnished, just bring your cloths...
Most apartments will be empty or semi-furnished. We can help you with a trip to IKEA or other warehouse to complete your basic household.

*** It is very important to have a house contract in your name because only then you can get your BSN number (Tax number) that will allow you to open a bank account and link it to utilities (water, electricity, gas, internet). ***
