In the Netherlands, BSN or the Burger Service Nummer is the equivalent of a social security number. It is a unique 9-digit identification number that is required for most official transactions in the country, such as opening a bank account, registering for healthcare services, and paying taxes. Without a BSN number, it is difficult to carry out any such transactions in the Netherlands.
Upon arrival in the country and after you have signed your house contract, your account manager will arrange a meeting with the local municipality to register yourself and obtain a BSN number. Normally, it takes around 3-4 days to receive the BSN number after registration. However, in some cases, a quick registration may not be possible, or you may not know your exact address in advance. In such situations, we can arrange a Registration for Non-Residents (RNI) that is valid for up to 4 months.
In case you would like to do your own research you can check out the official Gemeente site. Keep in mind that for your appointment you will need:
- Identification (passport or ID)
- Your new house contract
- A translated birth certificate in English, stamped by an official translator or a lawyer to support its originality. (In case you don't have one with you at the appointment you will still get your BSN number but your file will be incomplete. Then you will need to make a new appointment to bring the birth certificate to a Gemeente within 6 months otherwise you will be fined!)
*** If you're considering taking the initiative to schedule an appointment for your BSN number, persistence is key. It's worth noting that securing a free appointment may require a wait of 2 to 3 months from your initial search. Here's a breakdown of the steps to follow:
- Step 1: Begin your search for Gemeente offices in various locations. Keep in mind that central offices tend to be busier. Unfortunately, you'll need to conduct separate searches for each location.
- Step 2: Check the appointment page daily, as cancellations occur quite frequently.
- Step 3: If you live nearby, consider visiting the Gemeente office in person. Despite their preference for online or phone appointments, politely insist and request that they check for any daily cancellations. These last-minute openings often don't appear on the website. This approach may sound unconventional, but it's precisely how I successfully obtained my BSN number.
