Water

After successfully obtaining your Dutch bank account, you can proceed to arrange your utility bills. When it comes to Dutch water services, they are assigned to specific regions in the Netherlands and cannot be chosen by consumers. The registration period is not determined by months but rather aligns with the duration of your residence in a particular housing arrangement. You can transfer your registration to a different residence as long as the same water company serves your new location.

Consumption is calculated initially on two factors such as the number of occupants in the house or apartment and the overall consumption patterns in the region. This calculation will be suggested for you, eliminating the need for you to make a selection as you did with electricity and gas. However, later on you can always visit the website and decide to change the monthly payment to higher or lower. An annual meter reading is conducted by the resident/ owner after an email notification. The period of the annual reading depends on the location of your neighbourhood. For example in my region it always happens in the end of June. I rented my house in March so my annual meter reading included only 4 months and from that reading they recalculated my suggested monthly payments again. The difference (plus or minus) is added or taken from your next water bill and for me it was only 6 euros more because I opted to pay the suggested minimum amount.

For Amsterdam residents, for an one-person apartment, I used to pay 14 euros per month, and after the annual recalculation, my payment increased to 17 euros per month. Due to the consumption amount, I can only opt for direct monthly payment from my bank account. It's worth noting that I have the flexibility to choose the week when the funds are withdrawn.

P.S. It's advisable to capture photographs of your smart or regular meters on the first day of moving into your new apartment. This precaution ensures their documentation in case your realtor or landlord inadvertently misses this step, safeguarding their inclusion in your contract.

** Dutch tap water is among the safest for consumption globally, and it undergoes regular testing by Dutch water suppliers. Therefore, there is no necessity for water filters or purchasing bottled water. **

Fun Fact: I know people who have decided to arrange large automatic payments for water because they will get a big refund ones per year. They use it like a form of monthly savings method!
