Sending a letter in the Netherlands is a straightforward process, but there are a couple of things to keep in mind for efficient delivery:

1. Postal code and the orange mailbox:

  • When sending letters in the Netherlands, you'll notice orange mailboxes with two drop-in slots. One slot is designated for letters with postal codes within a specified range of numbers, while the other slot is labeled “others.”
  • The purpose of this system is to streamline and expedite the delivery process. If the postal code on your letter matches the range specified for one slot, simply drop it in that slot (usually right one) . However, if the postal code falls outside that range, use the "other" slot (usually left one).

2. Online stamps (online versturen):

The Netherlands offers the convenience of online postage through the PostNL website

  • With online postage, you can purchase and use digital stamps (online postzegels) without the need to print them. Instead, you can write the provided alphanumeric code in a rectangular shape on your letter or package.
  • This method eliminates the need for physical stamps and allows you to prepare your mail online. Simply select the type of postage you require, make an online payment, and obtain the alphanumeric code. Then, write the code on your letter or package in the specified format.
