Public Transportation

Public transport in the Netherlands, including trains, buses, metros, trams, and ferries, is seamlessly integrated with Google Maps, making trip planning a breeze. To add to the convenience, buses and trams also accept credit card payments onboard, eliminating the need to search for ticket machines to purchase one-way or full-day tickets.

  • However, we highly recommend that anyone planning to live in the Netherlands get an anonymous OV-Chipkaart (blue) upon arrival. It costs 7.5 euros and is valid for 5 years. Simply top it up with the desired amount for your travels. Keep in mind that a minimum balance of 20 euros is required to use the train. You can easily obtain the OV-Chipkaart from special vending machines at airports and metro stations. It can be used by anyone anonymously, and you can manually top it up. If you decide not to use it anymore and still have remaining credit, you can request a refund.
  • Once you have a Dutch bank account, you can apply online for a personalized OV-Chipkaart (yellow). The advantage of this card is that it can be linked directly to your bank account for automatic top-ups, eliminating the need for manual reloading. As for our consultants at ITSync, we provide you with the blue OV-Chipkaart, explain how to use it, top it up, and link it to your account when we pick you up from the airport.

Yet, Dutch locals swear by their own apps. When planning their public transport journey they use the OV9292 app. Similar to Google Maps, this app allows you to conveniently plan your trips. One major advantage is that it provides advanced information about upcoming strikes or maintenance work, enabling you to plan your journey accordingly. Additionally, trains have their own dedicated app called NS.
